If you’re having trouble losing weight, getting a haircut or getting a massage, the benefits of eating healthy are just as clear as the calories.

But for some, the new health-promoting food you can find at the grocery store may just be more of the same: sugar-sweetened, processed foods.

According to a study published this week in the journal Diabetes Care, those eating sugar-based foods may have a 40 percent greater risk of diabetes.

“There’s a large body of evidence that shows that these foods, which are typically associated with obesity and diabetes, are probably also associated with an increased risk of these diseases,” said Dr. Peter J. Gershoff, professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco.

Gershoff led the study, which involved more than 30,000 people who were followed from 2006 to 2014.

While there is a lot of evidence showing that sugar-containing foods cause diabetes, there is also plenty of data suggesting that the health benefits of these foods are mostly mediated by their sugar content, which is usually lower than their calories.

A recent review published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that consuming sugar-rich foods is associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes.

The problem with sugar-filled foods is that it contains many sugars, like sucrose and maltodextrin, that can have a negative impact on blood sugar levels.

The sugars are also the source of a wide variety of harmful chemicals, including hydrogenated oils and trans fats, which can contribute to heart disease, diabetes and obesity.

There’s no clear answer for how these sugar-laden foods might affect your health.

Some studies suggest that they may be linked to weight gain and insulin resistance.

Others, like the study from JAMA Internal Medicine, found no association between eating sugar and diabetes.

“Our understanding is that the majority of sugars are metabolized to other sugars and then they get converted into fat and then we end up with these metabolic changes in the body,” said J. Michael Smith, PhD, an associate professor of epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

“There may be some people who are sensitive to sugar and it’s something to be concerned about.”
